It’s Asian American Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Breastfeeding Week

It's the 3rd week of National Breastfeeding Month. Let's start a conversation around Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Breastfeeding.

It's Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Breastfeeding Week

Last week of National Breastfeeding Month (Aug 8th to 14th) was Indigenous Milk Medicine Week. The theme was “From the Stars to A Sustainable Future.”  It was all about the connection between milk medicine, Mother Earth and the elements of water, land, fire, and air. The goal was to provide a platform to promote the health, communities, environment and traditions of our diverse indigenous people, while addressing their societal concerns and needs and promoting healthier breastfeeding practices.  This week of National Breastfeeding Month (From August 15th to 21st) will be focused on observing Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Breastfeeding Week. It is also known as AANHPI Week.

Telling Our Stories, Elevating Our Voices!

Our Theme for this week of National Breastfeeding Month is “Telling Our Stories, Elevating Our Voices!” It is all about providing Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders with a platform to tell their stories, share their diverse experiences and spread their voices. Ultimately the goal is to raise awareness to AANHPI issues and foster more meaningful conversations that bring about change while breaking down the systematic barriers that AANHPI mothers are facing across the country.

This week, we will be hearing from AANHPI community members, students and lactation professionals in conversations on how we can support healthier lactation in the AANHPI community while preserving the diverse cultural traditions. I hope you can take a moment to listen or start a conversation.

Final thoughts..

Together we can foster change in AANHPI Communities around the United States of America. It all starts by playing your part.

What are you currently doing in observance of AANHPI Breastfeeding Week? Feel free to participate by starting a conversation on social media around AANHPI Breastfeeding, especially their experiences and their challenges. Remember to follow on Facebook by Clicking Here. Next week we will be talking about Black Breastfeeding Week! I hope you can show support!
