As we continue our celebration of Women’s History Month, we shed light on more inspirational women whose leadership, advocacy, and vision has shaped policies that uplift and empower women, families, and communities. In this 2nd article of our Women’s History Month series, we highlight the remarkable contributions of 3 more women from more diverse backgrounds who have championed for gender equality, reproductive rights, the well-being of children, and a more inclusive society that caters to diverse cultures. 1. Pia Cayetano
Pia Cayetano is a distinguished Filipina politician, lawyer, and activist who served in the Philippine Senate for over a decade. Throughout her tenure, Senator Pia has been a leading advocate for policies that empower women, support children, and promote equal rights. Her efforts have resulted in the passage of landmark legislation, including the 105-Day Expanded Maternity Leave Law, the Magna Carta of Women, the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act, and the Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act.
2. Kimberly Moore-Salas, IBCLC
Kimberly Moore-Salas is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and Co-instructor for the Indigenous Breastfeeding Counselor training course. A proud member of the Navajo Nation, Kimberly has lived among various tribal communities throughout her life, drawing deep connections to her heritage and people. She is a beacon of inspiration not only for women but for Native American communities as well. With a strong commitment to promoting culturally relevant breastfeeding resources, education, and support, Kimberly advocates for the well-being of Indigenous and culturally-diverse families. Her work empowers communities to embrace breastfeeding as a vital, empowering tradition, while ensuring that resources are accessible and aligned with the values and practices of the people she serves. 3. Dr. Sahira Askari Long, MD, IBCLC, FAAP, FABM
Dr. Sahira Long is an IBCLC, board-certified pediatrician, and professor who has proudly served as president of the DC Breastfeeding Coalition for over 20 years. She also serves on the Board of Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere (ROSE), a non-profit with a mission to address breastfeeding disparities in communities of color. Her tireless commitment to breastfeeding advocacy at the national, state, and local level, along with her dedication to closing the gap in breastfeeding rates, reflects her passion for ensuring that all families have access to the support and resources they need to thrive. Her work continues to inspire change and empower communities, making a lasting impact on maternal and child health.
