Kathy Parkes has been in the lactation field for over 30 years. She began as a volunteer counselor with La Leche League International after experiencing difficulties breastfeeding her first daughter. At that time, LLLI was the only source of breastfeeding support, and with their help she was able to successfully breastfeed for the first year, even after returning to work. When her second daughter was born, she and her husband made the decision for Kathy to be able to stay home with both girls, enabling her to successfully breastfeed baby their second daughter for 3 years. It was during this time that Kathy found her calling and mission in life: to help other mothers breastfeed successfully to meet their goals.
Since that time, Kathy has successfully achieved the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and Registered Nurse titles, obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and a Master’s degree in Nursing Education. Breastfeeding Perspectives is Kathy’s second private lactation practice based in San Antonio, TX, and she has worked in WIC, home health, and the hospital setting as an RN, IBCLC.
Perspectives in Lactation: Is Private Practice For Me? is Kathy’s first book and was published in 2016. She also serves as an online educator for Step2Education and Health-e-Learning, focusing on birthing facilities achieving the Baby-Friendly Hospital Designation and lactation professionals sitting the IBCLC exam. A frequent international speaker, Kathy travels and can be seen here in India just last year where she spoke at the 1st Annual Global Lactation Symposium in Mumbai.
