This week of National Breastfeeding Month, we will be celebrating Black Breastfeeding Week

Let's Celebrate Black Breastfeeding Week

From August 25th to the 31st we will be acknowledging Black Breastfeeding Week. This week, we will be honoring the history of infant feeding in Black communities while sparking conversations to raise more awareness to the racial disparities and the other challenges that are faced by Black mothers, infants, and women in lactation and birthing professions around the country.

We outside!: Celebrating connection & our communities.

Black Breastfeeding Week is not only local, it also extends into Canada where it is recognized. Last years theme was “10 Years, A New Foundation” and it was all about reflecting on the past and recognizing that this is just the beginning. The theme for this years Black Breastfeeding Week is “We Outside!: Celebrating Connection & Our Communities.”

This year’s celebration focuses primarily on the Black community and fostering meaningful connections. This week is all about celebrating and encouraging healthy breastfeeding among Black moms. It is about appreciating the hard work of the birth workers, lactation consultants and breastfeeding advocates in our communities. It is also about providing resources to the families, mothers and children who need it most.

Making an impact, one step at a time.

The Black community is rich, resilient and diverse in culture. But there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to address the challenges that mothers face and the lack of representation in the industry. One step that you could take to show support is to promote Black Breastfeeding Week on Social Media or start a conversation with the following hashtags:

#blackbreastfeedingweek  #WeOutside  #BBW23

You can also start the conversation on your next physical or virtual gathering. Another way that you can show support is by donating to the Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association.

If you found this article interesting then please don’t forget to share it to raise awareness to Black Breastfeeding Week. In our last post, we spoke about AANHPI Breastfeeding Week, as well as Indigenous Medicine Week. Next we will be celebrating Semana de La Lactancia Latina from the 5th to the 11th of September.
