Workplace Lactation Week highlights the need for workplaces to provide lactation-friendly environments to support both the health of employees and culture of the company

Celebrating Workplace Lactation Week

In a world where work-life balance is becoming increasingly important, Breastfeeding support for mothers in the workplace is not just a “nice to have” but an essential component of a modern workplace. So Workplace Lactation Week was created to allow us to raise more awareness about the need to support breastfeeding mothers in the workplace. It is observed from September 1st to 7th at the end of National Breastfeeding Month to recognize the vital roles, contributions, and rights of nursing parents. It is also a time to share information on best practices, resources and laws on breastfeeding across the US.

Making Lactation Support A Reality

The theme for last year was “Preparing for The PUMP Act” and it was the first Workplace Lactation Week celebration. For this year, the theme is “Policy to Practice: Making Lactation Support a Reality” and it is focused on pushing for policies that support the needs of women who are returning to the workplace. By supporting these needs, we can sustain both the well-being of employees and the success of the organization.

A lot of working mothers feel forced to choose between their jobs and their commitment to breastfeeding. This leads to increased stress, lower job satisfaction, and higher turnover rates. But with adequate workplace lactation support, we can alleviate these challenges. But breastfeeding support is not just about providing a space to pump. It is more about having dedicated lactation rooms, flexible break times, and non-discriminatory policies. This helps to enhance the reputation of the company and attract top talent.

How Can Employers Support Workplace Lactation Week?

  1. Take some time to review and rethink your company’s policies on lactation support. Are you following the laws of your state? Is there any more room for improvement? How can you make your workplace more convenient for breastfeeding mothers?
  2. Take some time to appreciate the working mothers in your company or organization for their dedication to both their families and jobs. Even a simple gesture or token of appreciation can go a long way.
  3. Spark a conversation around lactation in the workplace on Linkedin, or share a post from someone else. This will help to promote the cause and reach more employers on the platform.
  4. Follow and engage with the official Facebook page @WorkplaceLactationWeek

Final Thoughts

Balancing workplace responsibilities with breastfeeding can be a challenge for many mothers. Although progress has been made, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to address the disparities between different states. But by staying up to date on legislation, mothers can ensure that their rights are being protected. That is why in a previous blog post on Breastfeeding In the Workplace Law, we shed light on breastfeeding laws in the states of Texas, California, and New York. We hope you find it informative, please don’t forget to share.
